Three of the European cities where Picasso lived and worked—Paris, Antibes, and Barcelona—have museums dedicated to his art. Another has just opened in the Spanish port city of Málaga, the artist’s birthplace.Thanks to two of Picasso’s heirs (his son Paulo’s wife, Christine Ruiz-Picasso, and Christine and Paulo’s son Bernard, who have donated or lent all 204 works on view), the Museo Picasso Málaga offers a refreshing, intimate look at the master’s career through the early 1970’s.

Among the family heirlooms on display are rarely exhibited drawings, sculptures, and paintings that depict Picasso’s wives (Olga Kokhlova with Mantilla), lovers (Jacqueline Seated), and children (Mother and Child). Designed by New York architect Richard Gluckman, the complex incorporates historic structures, including a 16th-century Mudejar-style palace, into a series of Modernist stucco buildings that recall the pueblos blancos in the hills above the city.

“El Picasso de Los Picasso,” the inaugural exhibition, runs through February, bringing together an additional 87 works from the three other Picasso museums and from the private collections of numerous Picasso descendants. “It was important to open with this exhibition,” says museum director Carmen Giménez, “to have the entire family involved.”
