Cubist Fandango. Niño de Elche concert

Oct 31, 2023

Niño de Elche combines the concepts of flamenco and Cubism in a celebration that brings together different cultural origins and artistic aesthetics.

Having taken on board everything, from the most elementary to the truly essential, that the practice of flamenco has given us, Niño de Elche describes himself as ex-flamenco. It is a way of expressing his determination to recognise the different ground zeroes that art and its labels leave behind, an inexhaustible search that is both personal and collective. More a field of meaning than a specific discipline, his conception of the genre signifies a positive vindication as opposed to a settling of scores with his tradition and his past. Take, for instance Fandango Cubista de Pepe Marchena (Pepe Marchena’s Cubist fandango), a piece included in his Antología del cante flamenco heterodoxo (Anthology of heterodox flamenco) (2018), that gives its name to this show: a grand celebration of the perspectives of different cultural origins and artistic aesthetics. In this celebration to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Museo Picasso de Málaga, which combines two concepts – flamenco and Cubism – linked by joy, viewers can expect the unexpected.

Niño de Elche (1985) is an ex-flamenco artist who defies classification. His creations successfully combine artistic genres such as flamenco, free improvisation, krautrock and electroacoustic and contemporary music as well as poetry, performance, dance and acting. Notable among the dozen albums he has recorded is the latest one, Flamenco. Mausoleo de Celebración, Amor y Muerte (2022), as well as Sí, a Miguel Hernández (2013), Voces del Extremo (2015), Antología del Cante Flamenco Heterodoxo (2018), Colombiana (2019), Fuerza nueva (2019) with the Granada-based band Los Planetas, and La distancia entre el barro y la electrónica. Siete diferencias valderomarianas (2020). He has brought out two books of poems, No comparto los postres (2016) and Morbo legítimo (2019), published by Bandaàparte Ediciones.
