PARADISE IN FLAMES
November 20, 2020
Part of ‘The Other Museum’ activities programme
In the form of a pseudo-documentary, “Paradise in Flames” deals with the final days of Republican Málaga through the eyes of three exceptional witnesses: writer and journalist Arthur Koestler, Norwegian photojournalist Gerda Grepp, and Scottish zoologist Sir Peter Chalmers-Mitchell, an aristocrat residing in Málaga who welcomes them into his home, Villa del Limonar. Together, the three of them construct a visual human story of the final hours of Málaga at the end of the Republic, before the Italian army entered the city on 8th February 1937.
For this portrait of an open city, “Paradise in Flames” uses archive material, three actors playing the main characters, and footage of Málaga during lockdown. This short film is the first part of a larger project, the feature-length “Caleta Palace”, currently in the pre-production stage. It covers the seven months of the Republican period during the civil war, through the testimony of 8 characters.
