The Traveller’s Gaze
Saturday, 13 March, 2021
A travel sketchbook becomes a valuable witness to a process in which the value of the whole is far greater than the sum of its parts. In it, experiences and observations are condensed into sketches whose imperfections are due to the capture of a fleeting moment and are more than compensated for by their freshness and authenticity. Words, also, are the inseparable companions of the images, complementing them on the blank sheet of paper, honing nuances and cementing thoughts and experiences. Looking back through the pages of a sketchbook, we relive what we once gazed at, along with the sounds and smells we noticed at the time and which are now associated with that piece of paper and our intense experience.
In this activity, led by the museum’s Department of Educational and Cultural Activities and Luis Ruiz Padrón, a tour of Miquel Barceló’s artworks is followed by a workshop where illustration, watercolour and drawing are brought together so we can examine ideas such as travel, the city, landscape, and more.
The Other Museum is an innovative project by Museo Picasso Málaga that involves art practice and reasoning. A space that is usually used for exhibitions has been transformed into a comfortable and safe multipurpose area for holding workshops on weaving, engraving and ceramics.
