Perpetual Metamorphosis

Photography: Pablo Asenjo © Museo Picasso Málaga

For Picasso, the ancient competition between painting and sculpture was meaningless. The constant evolution of his ideas exploded traditional differences between media, as his art moved in perpetual motion across painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking.

The artworks that are part of the exhibition Perpetual Metamorphosis, conceived by Michael Fitzgerald, belongs to the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. They show this creative interchange of mediums through a selection of works that Picasso made a few years after the end of World War II, one of the most inventive periods of his career. We can follow the development of his ideas from sketches on paper to the austere structure of the female figure in paintings, the radical reduction of sculptural form in the bronze Pregnant Woman, and the modelled clay Female Faun.

This exhibition is intended as a companion to the exhibition Picasso Sculptor. Matter and Body (May 9 – April 8 2023).
