CONVERSATIONS WITH PHILOSOPHERS, AN EXPERIMENTAL PROPOSAL ON MEDITATION AND THE TRADITIONAL ‘VERSOMETRAJE’, HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MaF 2023 PROGRAMME AT THE MUSEO PICASSO

17/02/2023

The Museo Picasso Málaga is again collaborating with MaF, Málaga de Festival, the run-up to the 26th Malaga Festival, by hosting five activities. Through the 130 activities that comprise its program, the MaF celebrates film-based culture while also reflecting on the society we live in. A large portion of this year’s edition is based on the theme ‘A world in liquidation’, which is designed as a reflection on the validity of essential values for human activity in the society of today’s world, and on its inhabitants’ emotional recuperation.

Between February 21 and March 4, the MPM auditorium will host a conversation between philosopher Diego Fusaro and the MPM’s artistic director, José Lebrero Stals; the experimental avant-garde cycle ‘Playing Picasso’ with ‘Solo Meditations’, a performance by violinist Luz Prado and DJ Kitty Soul; book presentations by their authors, such as Los brotes negros by Eloy Fernández Porta, and Incompletos. Una apuesta por el pensamiento elegante by José Carlos Ruiz; the programme at the MPM will end with the tenth edition of Versometraje, an activity that links image and word, this year with the special ‘Un mundo en liquidación’ (A world in liquidation).

The MPM Auditorium is hosting a total of five activities. The first, scheduled for Tuesday February 21 at 7.30 p.m., is a conversation between philosopher Diego Fusaro about his book El nuevo orden erótico. Elogio del amor y de la familia (El Viejo Topo, 2023), with José Lebrero Stals, director of the MPM. On Thursday March 2 at 7.30 p.m. the experimental avant-garde cycle ‘Playing Picasso’ returns with ‘Solo Meditations’, a performance by violinist Luz Prado and DJ Kitty Soul. On Friday 3 at 7.30 p.m. Eloy Fernández Porta will present his book Los brotes negros (Anagrama, 2022) as part of the cycle ‘La Palabra Punzante’, and on Saturday 4 there will be a double session with philosopher José Carlos Ruiz, who will present his book Incompletos. Una apuesta por el pensamiento elegante (Destino, 2023), at 6.30 p.m., followed at 8 p.m. by the closing session, the traditional Versometraje #10, an activity that links image and word, with the special ‘Un mundo en liquidación’ (A world in liquidation). All the events will be held in the MPM Auditorium with free admission until all places are filled.

For another year, the Museo Picasso Málaga is opening its doors to MaF. Malaga de Festival, a programme of activities held in the city as a prelude to the Malaga Film Festival, which this year celebrates its 26th edition. Conversations with philosophers, experimental avant-garde, and the usual Versometraje make up the programme of events hosted at the MPM Auditorium.

On Tuesday February 21 at 7.30 p.m., a discussion will take place between Italian philosopher and professor Diego Fusaro (Turin, 1983) and the MPM’s artistic director, José Lebrero Stals, about Fusaro’s recent book, El nuevo orden erótico. Elogio del amor y de la familia (El Viejo Topo, 2023). In his work, Fusaro guides readers through the main themes of a reflection that involves us all as erotic beings. Fusaro invites us to reflect on the new globalised and deregulated erotic order, revealing to us that the laissez-faire of economic liberalism and sentimental liberalism are, paradoxically, two sides of the same coin.

On Thursday March 2 at 7.30 p.m. the avant-garde artistic cycle ‘Playing Picasso’ returns with violinist Luz Prado (Málaga, 1985) and DJ and producer Kitty Soul, who present ‘Solo Meditations’, an approach to meditation based on the work of American composer and accordionist Pauline Oliveros, a key figure in the development of experimentation in electronic music.

As part of ‘La palabra punzante’ (The piercing word), a cycle designed to explore how the current lifestyle affects our mental wellbeing, on Friday March 3 at 7.30 p.m. a discussion will take place between social economist Enrique Benítez Palma and essayist Eloy Fernández Porta (Barcelona, 1974) about Fernández’s book Los brotes negros (Anagrama, 2022). The Catalan author puts together a fractured self-portrait, a journal of psychological suffering that describes in clear and straightforward terms the symptoms and intensities of a prolonged anxiety disorder and its gloomy progression: the phases of despair, the episodes of anger, the suicidal thoughts.

The week will end with a double programme on Saturday March 4. First, at 6.30 p.m., the book Incompletos. Filosofía para un pensamiento elegante (Destino, 2023) will be presented by its author, José Carlos Ruiz. Using clear and straightforward language, in his latest essay, the philosopher and lecturer at the University of Cordoba advocates elegant thinking as a remedy for the symptoms of hypermodernity. The activities will end at 8.00 p.m. with Versometraje #10, a classic feature of the collaboration between the Museo Picasso Málaga and the Málaga Festival, an activity that links image and word to create a common ground from which to generate new meanings and languages. This year’s edition revolves around the main theme of MaF 2023, ‘A world in liquidation’.

MaF - Málaga de Festival is organised by Málaga city council and Málaga Procultura, with the collaboration of Fundación ‘la Caixa’. Entry to all these activities that are part of MaF 2032 – Málaga de Festival is free until all places are filled. The MPM Auditorium is located in Plaza de la Higuera (Calle Postigo San Agustín, accessed via C/Alcazabilla).
