LECTURES AT THE MUSEO PICASSO MÁLAGA ON THE MARÍA BLANCHARD EXHIBITION

16/04/2024

The exhibition María Blanchard. A Painter in Spite of Cubism, a retrospective that surveys the various stages in this artist’s life, opens at the Museo Picasso Málaga on April 29.

Notable among the programme of cultural activities the museum has designed to mark the occasion are the María Blanchard talks that begin with the inaugural lecture by the curator of this exhibition, José Lebrero, at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday April 30 at the Christine Ruiz-Picasso auditorium. Open to the public until all places filled.

The Museo Picasso Málaga hosts programmes of educational and cultural activities related to its exhibitions. Tuesday April 30 marks the start of a series of talks given by experts on María Blanchard’s works: the inaugural lecture by José Lebrero with the same title as the exhibition María Blanchard. A Painter in Spite of Cubism. Lebrero will discuss various aspects of the oeuvre of the Santander-born painter: the rich symbolism of the themes she was interested in; the social commitment of her legacy; and the formal complexity and innovative nature of her various visual explorations, among others. In her post-Cubist figurative period, on which the exhibition focuses, she intensely expressed her deep concern about the human condition and emotions in the everyday world of women and children by exploring themes such as gender, ethnicity, national identity and social class.

The second talk, scheduled for Thursday May 23, will be given by María José Salazar, a doctor of art history and curator, and Xon de Ros, a lecturer at Oxford University. María José Salazar will discuss María Blanchard, Paradigm of Voiceless Brushes at 6.00 p.m. in the Christine Ruiz-Picasso auditorium, and Xon de Ros will explore the subject of María Blanchard and Female Genius at 7.00 p.m.

All these lectures, which are open to the public until all places are filled, will be streamed via the Museo Picasso Málaga’s YouTube channel.
