The Swedish pianist Helge Antoni will perform for the first time at the MPM Auditorium on Tuesday, February 14, at 8 p.m. as part of the Chamber Music Series of the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra—with which he has collaborated on previous occasions—in a concert featuring pieces by Romantic composers Fréderic Chopin and Edvard Grieg.
The first part of the concert will be dedicated to Frédéric Chopin (1810–1849), a highly talented Polish composer and pianist who is considered one of the most important composers in history and one of the major representatives of musical Romanticism. His compositions include Fantaisie-Impromptu in C-sharp minor, op. posth. 66, written in 1834, the opening piece of the musical event. Despite its beauty and fantasy, Chopin had no intention of allowing this piece to be performed for the general public and asked his friend Julian Fontana to burn the drafts after his death. However, Fontana did precisely the opposite, putting together a version from Chopin’s sketches and publishing it after the composer’s death.
The Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) will be the focus of the second part of the recital. Hailed as one of the foremost representatives of late Romanticism, he helped shape a Norwegian national identity by adapting many popular tunes and songs and by drawing inspiration from the Hardanger dialect and the fjords and landscapes of his country, leading some to call him the ‘Chopin of the North’. Among the pieces that will be performed at the concert is the well-known Holberg Suite (written to celebrate the second centenary of the birth of writer Ludvig Holberg), as well as a selection of his lyrical piano compositions.
Born in Malmö, Sweden, and based in Málaga, musician Helge Antoni has an impressive international track record and is one of the most interesting pianists of his generation. Not long after turning 20, he became the first Swedish musician to receive a scholarship from the British Council. His career as a concert performer, both as a soloist and accompanying some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe and the USA, began very early on. Today he continues to tour Europe and North and South America extensively, as well as teach frequent workshops and master classes in which he passes on his musical knowledge to new generations. His recordings include the album ‘The Piano Experience’ (DB Productions), a recital of 300 years of piano music from Couperin to Pärt. He is one of the exclusive Steinway Artists.
