THE MUSEO PICASSO MÁLAGA DISCUSSES THE WORKS OF MARÍA BLANCHARD WITH ART STUDENTS FROM MÁLAGA UNIVERSITY

11/04/2024

María Blanchard. A Painter in Spite of Cubism, a retrospective that provides a chronological survey of the different stages in this woman artist’s life, opens at the Museo Picasso Málaga on April 29.

A team at the Museo Picasso Málaga has started up a project entitled ‘Blanchard hoy’ (Blanchard Today). Over the course of six sessions, they discuss and reflect on this artist together with a group of art history students at Málaga University (UMA) to create content related to the exhibition.

Blanchard Today is a project designed to create synergies between the Museo Picasso Málaga and final-year art history students at the UMA as part of the subject taught by the lecturer Belén Atencia, linked to Spanish avant-garde art. Over the course of six sessions, held alternately at the university and the museum, the students and the team from the Museo Picasso Málaga will pool their thoughts with a view to designing potential educational content on the exhibition María Blanchard. A Painter in Spite of Cubism.

Some of the issues they will discuss in depth are the figure of María Blanchard in the context of twentieth-century art, the keys to her painting – from her most abstract early pieces to her figurative works produced after 1920 – and Blanchard’s contribution to the modern movement and twentieth-century Spanish art. Lastly, the working group will propose educational activities to be held at the MPM and the students who have taken part will be invited to the opening of the exhibition.
