THE MUSEO PICASSO MÁLAGA PRESENTS ITS PODCAST CHANNEL

03/10/2024

The Museo Picasso Málaga is striding ahead in the world of art and technology with the launch of a pioneering line of podcasts, an innovative form of audio broadcasting designed to immerse listeners in the atmosphere of its exhibitions.

This new communication line begins with a series of four episodes devoted to the exhibition of the American photographer Joel Meyerowitz. Europe 1966–1967, available on SPOTIFY, APPLE PODCAST and IVOOX and offering an audio and visual journey guided by the artist’s own voice. This immersive experience transcends the physical barriers of the exhibition space.

In a world where digital content and immersive experiences are setting trends, the MPM has adapted and evolved to offer new ways of bringing art to its audiences. Known for its innovative spirit and contemporary approach, the museum has gone one step further by announcing the launch of its new series of audio podcasts. The MPM offers an audio experience in which listeners can access exhibitions through a narrative where history, storytelling, the script and sound effects combine to create a sensory experience.

A new way of telling art stories

The MPM already has a well-established presence on platforms such as YouTube, with 330 videos and 5.2K subscribers, and Spotify, where it has presented music playlists to accompany several of its exhibitions. However, this new podcast format goes much further. The institution’s intention is clear: to create narratives that not only explain art but bring it to life. Each podcast is designed as a kind of audio documentary where sound effects, voice-overs and music create an immersive atmosphere that captures the essence of the exhibition.

For the launch of this first podcast series Photographer on a Journey. Podcast of the exhibition Joel Meyerowitz. Europe 1966–1967, the museum has chosen the work of the famous New York photographer and his current exhibition at the Museo Picasso Málaga for a total of four episodes each lasting less than ten minutes. This new audio podcast format combines the best of technology with artistic narrative, a field that was hitherto unexplored in the museum sector. It is not just an audio guide, but a true sensory experience. ‘With this format, we’re not just telling a story, we’re making the listener part of it,’ says Miguel López-Remiro, artistic director of the MPM. ‘The museum wants this initiative to be a new way of getting audiences to engage with its exhibitions and collection, in a closer and more emotional way’.

A sound journey with Joel Meyerowitz

The series on Meyerowitz addresses one of the photographer’s most interesting periods, when he toured Europe in the 1960s and reflected its essence in iconic pictures. What makes this initiative unique, however, is that the narration is guided by Meyerowitz’s own voice. Over the course of four episodes, listeners will be able to follow him through the urban and rural landscapes he captured with his camera. Each episode recreates sounds, atmospheres and emotions that Meyerowitz experienced during his journey. The sound effects, such as traffic noise, voices in the street or the flamenco art that captivated him in Málaga, help listeners to not only ‘see’ the photographs, but also ‘feel’ the context in which they were taken.

The Museo Picasso Málaga is known for its narrative approach to exhibitions, and this new line of podcasts is no exception. Each episode is carefully crafted to tell a story in which art, history and emotions are intertwined. Joel Meyerowitz’s current exhibition is a perfect example of this: a photographer who captures not just images, but moments full of life and meaning. The four episodes of the podcast follow a narrative thread that invites listeners to immerse themselves in Meyerowitz’s creative process and personal experience as he travelled through Europe. It is not just a series of anecdotes or technical descriptions of the photographs, but an emotional journey that adds a new dimension to the photographer’s work.

The combination of narrative, technology and audio art paves the way for endless possibilities for future exhibitions and projects. The four episodes of Photographer on a Journey. Podcast of the exhibition Joel Meyerowitz. Europe 1966–1967 are now available on SPOTIFY | APPLE PODCAST | IVOOX and the museum has already announced that it is working on new series relating to future shows.
