From 13th February to 13th May 2018, Federico Fellini’s world will arrive at Museo Picasso Málaga with the exhibition And Fellini Dreamed of Picasso. Curated by Audrey Norcia, who holds a PhD in art history, this intimate and small-scale exhibition will show a selection of drawings, films, photographs and other documents belonging to the Italian director which, along with paintings, sculptures and drawings by Pablo Picasso, will make evident the sensibilities and obsessions shared by these two 20th-century giants. They address dilemmas such as transgression, sexuality, the exaltation of life, exuberance and metamorphosis, at times presented in a surrealist manner and in unusual circumstances. Organized with the collaboration of Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso.

In the spring, Museo Picasso Málaga will be presenting Warhol. Mechanical Art, an exhibition that offers a look at this iconic artist’s creative development from his beginnings, in 1950s New York, up until his death in 1987. After being shown in Barcelona and Madrid, the exhibition will increase in size, coming to Málaga with almost 400 artworks that include sculptures, drawings, silkscreen paintings, installations, artist’s books, designer objects and fashion, record sleeves, posters, magazines, films, TV and audio material, and photographs. From 31st May to 16th September, Museo Picasso Málaga will be showing the most emblematic and universal icons of the world that Warhol created: the Campbell’s Soup Can, the portraits of Jackie Kennedy and Liz Taylor, and also experimental films such as Screen Tests and the legendary Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a multi-media installation devised with rock band The Velvet Underground. The works are on loan from over forty sources, including the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, with major loans from the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and the Tate (London), as well as from other national and international public institutions and private collections. Organized with the collaboration of Obra Social “la Caixa”.

Finally, from 9th October 2018 to 3rd February 2019, Picasso and Andalusia explores the relationship between the work of Pablo Picasso and the artistic heritage held by Andalusian museums. In this exhibition, the artistic riches of Anadalusia will be juxtaposed with a selection of work by Picasso from the Musée National Picasso in Paris, and other institutions, enabling connections to be made between Picasso and Iberian art, classical antiquity, the Spanish Baroque period and the Andalusian modern avant-garde movements. Organized in collaboration with Consejería de Cultura, Junta de Andalucía.

In the autumn, and coinciding with this exhibition, the Museo Picasso Málaga will be hosting the 4th International Picasso Congress, “Picasso and History”, in which national and international experts with specialist knowledge of Picasso’s work will be taking part. The congress will provide a common thread with which to approach the artist from a multidisciplinary viewpoint that comprises not only art history, but also anthropology, literature and even architecture. Since 2015, the congress has provided an annual forum in which to present the latest studies on Picasso and his work. The first two editions were held at the Musée National Picasso in Paris, and the third one, in 2016, at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona.

As is the custom at MPM, each of the exhibitions scheduled for 2018 will be accompanied by its own programme of cultural activities, which will highlight the main artistic and historical themes that they cover. In Museo Picasso Málaga’s 15th Anniversary year, the academic and exhibition programmes will be aimed at continuing to examine the vast personal universe of a 20th-century artist who changed the history of art.
