Andalusia Day. Open house at the museum

This is a great opportunity to visit the permanent display Pablo Picasso: Structures of Invention. The Unity of a Life’s Work. The one hundred and forty-four works on view reveal Picasso’s personality and extraordinary ability to create innovative structures that made him one of the most influential artists of the modern period. In addition, the temporary exhibition galleries are hosting the exhibition Picasso: The Royan Sketchbooks featuring drawings, gouaches, paintings and poems created by Picasso while living in the French town of Royan from September 1939 to August 1940 during the Second World War. Visitors can also view a guest work from the Fundación Sorigué: More Sweetly Play the Dance by South African Artist William Kentridge, which combines video, animation, drawing, music and performance to create an immersive and multidimensional experience.   Besides the art on display, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the Palacio de Buenavista, the building that houses the Museum, which is a superb example of sixteenth-century Andalusian architecture located in the city’s historic centre. Renaissance and Mudejar (Islamic) elements are combined in this building, which was designated a National Monument in 1939. Beneath ground level are an archaeological site with Phoenician and Roman remains and rooms of the former Renaissance palace, which offer visitors snippets of the history of Málaga.   Another possibility is to visit the Picasso and printmaking area to view the Crommelynck printing press and explore the various printmaking techniques used by the artist, as well as the ‘Lifeline’, a biographical, artistic and historical survey that contextualises the works by Pablo Picasso on show at the Museo Picasso Málaga.
