The language of Numismatics. Picasso on Coins

Oct 24, 2024

Talk given by Alfonso Morales Muñoz, chief engraver at the Spanish royal mint (Real Casa de la Moneda), about coins issued with images of Pablo Picasso.

The preservation of the language of numismatics should be encouraged with the greatest possible commitment from both a cultural and historical point of view. Every initiative of this kind not only contributes to safeguarding an extremely ancient knowledge, but also helps keep alive a tradition that has borne witness to civilisations, memorable events and artistic expressions over the centuries.

Numismatics involves much more than simply collecting coins and medals; it has a profound significance that transcends mere physical objects. It is both a serious science and an art form in which humans can document historical events and convey emotions and values through aesthetics. The act of capturing an image that does not exist in reality but comes to life only in the engraver’s mind and eye is a unique and deeply stimulating experience.

Alfonso Morales Muñoz, the chief engraver at Spain’s royal mint, will guide the audience through the challenge of merging one of the oldest artistic disciplines, numismatics, with the incomparable legacy of Pablo Picasso in an edition of eight silver coins.

With the collaboration of the Real Casa de la Moneda. Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre.
