Flamenco x Joel Meyerowitz

Jun 18 —— Dec 12, 2024

Flamenco x Joel Meyerowitz features a programme of activities scheduled for June to December 2024, in which the US photographer’s works enter into dialogue with flamenco culture at the Museo Picasso Málaga and in other spaces in the city.

Málaga was a very important milestone in Joel Meyerowitz’s travels around Europe, not only in terms of photography – as he found a city of contrasts and immortalised street scenes with his camera – but also on a personal level, as through his friend Paul Hecht and his partner Vivian’s wish to learn to play flamenco guitar, he came into contact with the Escalona family, whose patriarch Antonio Escalona became Vivian’s teacher. Two Americans suddenly became part of the flamenco world, but a very particular flamenco – a traditional, deeply expressive kind, with an initiatory nature that fascinated them.

The programme, which includes activities in and outside the museum, sets out to recreate and analyse this vernacular flamenco in which Joel and Vivian played an active part, both at the Escalonas’ home and in the iconic Peña Juan Breva, as attested by his photographs.
